‘Traditional marriage’ apparently means exclusively the coming together of a man and a woman. Well, this is one tradition in one country. But traditions evolve and change — being made on earth and not in heaven. So they will continue to do. But — horror of horrors! — O’Brien identifies another danger:
If marriage can be redefined so that it no longer means a man and a woman but two men or two women, why stop there? Why not allow three men or a woman and two men to constitute a marriage, if they pledge their fidelity to one another? If marriage is simply about adults who love each other, on what basis can three adults who love each other be prevented from marrying?
This is, I think, an unlikely scenario. Relationships between three or more people certainly exist, but few are able to cope psychologically with such relationships when they are ‘cemented’ under one roof. The idea does not anyway exercise me. Probably some couples have got married dressed as Donald Duck and Goofy, sometime, somewhere. So what?
But then we see that the Cardinal expresses concern about the welfare of children. I wonder that he has the gall. As far as I am concerned, the Roman Catholic Church has had all its rights abrogated in this area. Likewise, it has vitiated any right to pronounce on the subject of homosexuality. Gay people seek out their own kind, and enter into mutual relationships. They do not groom victims and destroy lives. Nor do they proselytise.
Ah, the Pope in all his gold and red finery! I still agree with the disaffected Father Tom Doyle:
...they ought to sell the Vatican to the Mormons or to Disney or something and go out and start all over again.
Cardinal O’Brien has of course been outed since this was written
